If-clauses Typ 2: unwahrscheinliche Bedingungen
Du bildest Bedingungssätze vom Typ 2 mit Simple Past und would und drückst damit aus, was unwahrscheinlich oder nur vorgestellt ist.
So funktioniert es
Beim Typ 2 ist die Bedingung unwahrscheinlich oder nicht wirklich gegeben. Man stellt sich etwas nur vor:
- If I had a million euros, I would buy a house by the sea. (Ich habe sie aber nicht.)
- If I were you, I would tell her the truth. (Ich bin aber nicht du.)

were statt was
Bei to be steht im if-Satz in gehobenem und schulischem Englisch für alle Personen were: If I were rich … If she were here … Umgangssprachlich hört man auch „If I was“. In Klassenarbeiten und besonders in „If I were you“ ist were die sichere Wahl.
could und might
Statt would kann im Hauptsatz could (könnte) oder might (könnte vielleicht) stehen: If we had more time, we could visit the museum.
Kein would im if-Satz
Wie beim Typ 1 gilt: Im if-Satz steht kein would. Nicht: If I would have money …
Typ 1 oder Typ 2?
Es kommt darauf an, wie wahrscheinlich der Sprecher die Bedingung hält:
- If I win the lottery, I will buy a car. (Der Sprecher hält es für möglich.)
- If I won the lottery, I would buy a car. (Der Sprecher hält es für unwahrscheinlich.)
Ratschläge
„If I were you, …“ ist eine höfliche Art, einen Rat zu geben: If I were you, I would apologise.

Typ 2 (unwahrscheinlich oder nur vorgestellt): if + Simple Past, Hauptsatz mit would + Grundform. Bei be im if-Satz were. Kein would im if-Satz.
